âLyra, just give her a minute!â Doyle stood over Briarâs pale form as she managed a few bites of bread to try and settle her stomach. As soon as Briar woke from her trance, Lyra had been notified and showed up only minutes later. Doyle told her calmly what Briar said when she woke, and Lyra kept asking question after question, trying to figure out what Briar had seen and what she meant.
âWe have been waiting for weeks for her to show any sign of life. Now she finally does something useful, but she won't say anything helpful! My sister must be stopped before she rips this world apart more than it already is! I donât have time to just sit around and wait for this fae to have a meal and work out what she is and is not going to tell us!â Lyra screeched though her pointed teeth, her long ponytail whipping as she jerked her head toward Briar.
âDo you know what my life has been like for the past few weeks?â Briarâs voice broke through with some of her old strength. Her eyes regained some of their color, and she looked ready to rip Lyraâs daggers from their sheaths and stab her with them. Lyra seemed to notice the look she was getting, which only made her eye the fae with surprised respect. âI have been mentally and physically living all the ways this idea of yours can go wrong. Over and over Iâve watched and felt all of us die. Iâve lived thousands of ways your sister beats us, tortures us, and kills us. You gave me that cursed ring to touch, and because you ripped my wings away, my powers - and my control over them - were weak. I had no way to navigate the bombardment of visions. So Iâm sorry the agony Iâve been stuck in has been inconvenient for your timeline.â
Doyle stood gazing at the beast of a woman that sat beside him. Her hands were shaking and her usually tawny skin was pale, but she held Lyraâs stare and refused to turn away. âI donât have an answer for you. All I know is in all those visions, we failed. Any little changes we made did nothing to the end event. The queen always won.â She shrugged tiredly. âSo all I can tell you is you canât do this on your own, unless you just secretly have a death wish. I have no way of knowing who to go to for help, or if there even is anyone who can help us. When I am not in their presence and donât have something that belongs to them, it is very hard for me to grasp any kind of future they might have. So if you donât mind, Iâm going to give my pounding head a break for five minutes, and eat this damn piece of bread before my body shuts down completely, and you donât have any hope of finding a way to bring down your sister.
